Disaster Situation
A volcano on the Indonesian island of Sumatra erupted Sunday, shootingblack smoke and ash up to 1,500 metres into the air and prompting theevacuation of thousands of residents. Mount Sinabung in the Karodistrict of North Sumatra province thundered to life shortly aftermidnight, shooting lava and other volcanic materials from its crater.Two people in Karo district, North Sumatra, were killed in the eruption of Mount Sinabung on Sunday morning. More than 10,000 people in 17 communities were evacuated, said MuhammadIrsal, a Red Cross worker deployed to the area. They took refuge ingovernment buildings and tents were also erected, Irsal said.
