EOS-RS Pyroclastic flow extent map: Indonesia, Semeru volcano, 5 Dec 2021, v0.4 This preliminary map shows areas that are likely affected by pyroclastic flows (shown by orange pixels of 25 m in size) in Eastern Java, Indonesia due to the eruption at Semeru volcano starting on 4 Dec 2021. It is validated using ground observations at Gladak Perak Bridge. The map extent is indicated by the white polygon. This map should be used as a guidance to identify areas that are likely affected, and is less reliable over urban and vegetated areas. This map may contain any changes caused by previous eruptions in 2020. The map is derived from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images acquired by the ALOS-2 satellites operated by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). The images were taken before (27 Oct 2019) and during (5 Dec 2021) the event. Analysed by the Earth Observatory of Singapore – Remote Sensing Lab (EOS-RS), in collaboration with NASA’s Disasters Program and the Advanced Rapid Imaging and Analysis (ARIA) team at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and California Institute of Technology.
