Disaster Situation

On Wednesday, November 19, 2025, Mount Semeru experienced a significant magmatic eruption, compelling the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) to raise the volcano's alert status from Level III (Siaga) to its highest tier, Level IV (Awas). The eruption intensified at approximately 16:00 WIB, ejecting a thick ash column rising 2,000 meters above the summit and unleashing hazardous pyroclastic flows (awan panas guguran) that traveled up to 14 kilometers toward the Besuk Kobokan sector in Lumajang Regency.
In response to the critical threat, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) coordinated the immediate evacuation of over 300 residents from high-risk villages to government shelters, while search and rescue operations were launched to secure approximately 60 hikers stranded near Ranu Kumbolo. Authorities have enforced a strict exclusion zone of 8 kilometers from the crater and up to 13 kilometers along the southeastern riverbanks, warning the public of the continued danger of pyroclastic density currents and potential cold lava floods (lahar) due to ongoing rainfall.
