Disaster Situation

Since late November 2025, torrential monsoon rains intensified by the rare Tropical Cyclone Senyar in the Malacca Strait have caused severe floods and landslides across Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. The death toll from floods and landslides on the Indonesian island of Sumatra has risen to 174, up from the previous 94, the country's disaster mitigation agency said on Friday (11/28), adding that dozens remain missing (Reuters). Indonesia's meteorological agency (BMKG) links the extreme rainfall to Cyclone Senyar's formation and track near Aceh and North Sumatra, while the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reports that evacuation and rescue operations continue to face access constraints and unstable weather conditions. BMKG warn (11/27) that an increase in moderate-intensity rainfall is still expected over the coming days and should be carefully monitored.
