Disaster Situation
Extreme Meteorological Event: On October 14, 2026, Istanbul was hit by one of its most severe extreme weather events in recent history. The city experienced catastrophic flash floods driven by torrential rainfall that reached up to 242 mm (kilograms per square meter) in northern and western districts. According to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB), this marks the highest single-day rainfall intensity recorded since 1985.
Most Affected Areas & Geomorphological Impact: The severe downpour heavily impacted the districts of Sarıyer (Ayazağa), Beykoz (Ömerli), Esenyurt, Başakşehir (İkitelli), Sultangazi, and Bayrampaşa. The saturated soil conditions combined with rapid urban surface runoff triggered 1,277 urban flooding incidents and led to 15 major landslides/mudflows, causing severe infrastructure disruptions.
