Disaster Situation

The flood has been on and off in Myanmar area sin June 2019 due to the Southwest Monsoon. However, for this satellite imagery we would like to focus on the recent Flood which starts Since August 8 th 2019 in three states, Bago, Kayin, and Mon.

ARIA-SG Flood Proxy Map: Myanmar, 2019 Floods v2.0 (Main)

ARIA-SG Flood Proxy Map: Myanmar, 2019 Floods v2.0 (Main) This map shows areas that are likely flooded in southern Myanmar due to heavy rains brought by the monsoon season, shown by light blue pixels of 25 m pixel size, and is a preliminary result. The map extents are indicated by the white polygon. This map should be used as a guidance to identify areas that are likely flooded, and may be less reliable over urban and vegetated areas.
Derived from synthetic aperture radar data acquired by the ALOS-2 satellites operated by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) before (13 Sep 2018) and after (15 Aug 2019) the event. Data was provided by Sentinel Asia. Analysed by the ARIA-SG team at the Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS), using the ARIA-SG system originally developed by NASA/JPL and Caltech.

Preliminary flood mapping after the Southwest Monsoon in Myanmar

The Geoinformatics Unit, RIKEN Center for Advanced Intelligence Project conducted a preliminary mapping of the affected areas using earth observation data. The Sentinal Asia Program provided the high-resolution ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 data used in this analysis. To detect the flooded areas, we carried out a change detection analysis using a pre-event SAR data acquired on September 13, 2018, and a post-event SAR data from August 15, 2019. The image shows the comparison of the pre- and post-event images, and the detected flooded areas (blue segments).
