Sentinel Asia Training on SAR Data Analysis for Earthquake Damage Assessment in Turkiye by Yamaguchi University and ADRC on 7 - 8 January 2025
Background
In Türkiye, there were M7.7 and M7.6 earthquakes on 6 February 2023.
The impacts of the earthquakes caused over 50,000 deaths in Türkiye and affected over 15 million people, underscoring the severe and farreaching consequences of disasters.
The earthquakes resulted in the destruction of more than 38,000 buildings in Türkiye, with over 200,000 severely damaged. (source: https://www.undrr.org/news/one-year-anniversary-6-february-earthquakes-turkiye-and-syria)
Sentinel Asia, established in 2006, is a voluntary initiative led by the Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum (APRSAF) to support disaster management in the Asia-Pacific region using earth observation satellite data. The initiative has been instrumental in providing timely satellite data and products for various disasters, including floods, landslides, earthquakes, etc. It facilitates the rapid sharing of satellite data and disaster assessment maps during emergencies, which is crucial for disaster management operations. It also promotes capacity building and regional cooperation among member countries and regions, encouraging knowledge exchange and collaborative projects to support member countries to develop expertise in using satellite data for disaster management.
Objectives
This training aims to enhancing the capacity to utilize earth observation data for damage assessment after the earthquake. The training will contribute to more effective disaster preparedness and emergency response in Türkiye.
- To introduce the participants to the Sentinel Asia initiative and its mechanisms for activating Emergency Observation Requests (EOR), as well as highlight successful case studies.
- To familiarize the participants with various earth observation satellite data relevant to disaster management.
- To equip the participants with practical skills in utilizing open-source software for satellite image analysis, particularly for damage assessment.
Expected Outcomes
- Be familiar with the Sentinel Asia initiative and its role in disaster management across the Asia-Pacific region.
- Be able to access and leverage Sentinel Asia's data archives and disaster assessment maps.
- Be proficient in utilizing the available earth observation data and processing tools for damage assessment of the buildings after the earthquake.
