Disaster Situation
A volcano erupted on Kuchinoerabu Island in Kagoshima Prefecture, southwestern Japan, on Friday morning. Pyroclastic flows have been confirmed to have reached the shore. The Japan Meteorological Agency says Mount Shindake, located in the center of the island, erupted shortly before 10 AM. The agency raised the eruption-alert level to 5 on a scale of 1 to 5. The municipal government has issued an evacuation order and urged all residents to leave the island. Kuchinoerabu Island is located 130 kilometers southwest of Kagoshima city and has a population of about 110. (source: NHK World)
