Sentinel Asia Training on Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) Mapping using Earth Observation Satellite Data in Nepal on 29 – 31 July 2025

Background

Nepal, home to a significant portion of the Himalayas, is experiencing rapid environmental changes driven by global climate change. Among the most pressing hazards associated with these changes are Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) — sudden releases of water from glacial lakes, typically caused by the failure of natural dams formed by moraine or ice. Over the past few decades, the number and size of glacial lakes in Nepal have increased considerably, heightening the risk of catastrophic flooding events that threaten lives, livelihoods, critical infrastructure, and fragile mountain ecosystems.

Sentinel Asia, established in 2006, is a voluntary initiative led by the Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum (APRSAF) to support disaster management in the Asia-Pacific region using earth observation satellite data. The initiative has been instrumental in providing timely satellite data and products for various disasters, including floods, landslides, earthquakes, GLOF, etc. It facilitates the rapid sharing of satellite data and products during emergencies, which is crucial for GLOF early responses. It also promotes capacity building and regional cooperation among member countries, encouraging knowledge exchange and collaborative projects to support member countries to develop expertise in using satellite data for disaster management.

Objectives

This training aims to build upon Sentinel Asia's existing framework and Government of Nepal's ongoing efforts in GLOF risk reduction. By enhancing the capacity to utilize earth observation data for GLOF mapping, the training will contribute to more effective disaster preparedness and emergency response in Nepal.

  1. To introduce the participants to the Sentinel Asia initiative and its mechanisms for activating Emergency Observation Requests (EOR), as well as highlight successful case studies.
  2. To familiarize the participants with various earth observation satellite data relevant to GLOF related mapping and monitoring.
  3. To equip the participants with practical skills in utilizing open-source software for satellite image analysis, particularly for GLOF related mapping and monitoring.

Expected Outcomes
  • Be familiar with the Sentinel Asia initiative and its role in disaster management across the Asia-Pacific region.
  • Be able to access and leverage Sentinel Asia's data archives and value-added products.
  • Be proficient in utilizing the available earth observation data and processing tools for GLOF related mapping and monitoring.
