Disaster Situation
A developing tropical cyclone has brought torrential rains over southern parts of the Bay of Bengal. Heavy downpours have been bearing down on Sri Lanka for the last few days now. There has been widespread flooding in parts of the country and the next few days look just as unsettled. Kandy saw 69mm of rain and Galle had 71mm of rain in the 24 hours up to 0600GMT on Sunday. Meanwhile Colombo recorded 128mm. Pottuuil was even wetter with 144mm in the same period of time. Over 100,000 people are expected to be affected by severe flooding in the North-East of Sri Lanka following heavy rainfall over the last four days. In Jaffna alone, over 76,673 people have been affected by the floods, with at least 254 houses suffering damage, said the Jaffna District Disaster Management Centre on Monday. The refugee camps in Lonappulam and Valigamam north were also severely affected according to sources on the ground.
